Like a prayer is to a Christian, magic is how we commune with our Deities. Instead of whining to our higher power, we take an active role in affecting the change we want to see. And while there’s no true right or wrong way to perform magic, there are things you can use or manipulate to help your end goal as much as possible. Let’s talk about it!

Always start your spell work with cleansed tools, and clear intentions. Intent is the base of all magick; without it there is no magic. To be as clear and concise as possible, always cleanse your tools, and crystals in the light of the full moon. Just place the items on the windowsill the night of the full moon and let everything bask in the energy of the moon. It is cleansing and charging all at once. Once you’ve decided what you’re wanting your spell to do for you there are a lot of different things you can take into consideration. These considerations will set yourself up for success as much as possible.

Each day of the week has correspondences associated with them. Planets, crystals, herbs, and Deities can be used to help plan the timing for your spell. You can also look at the moon phases to help decide when to do your spell. Each phase of the moon is good for different types of magic. Each hour also has certain correspondences too. However, for most people it’s hard to plan it perfectly to the hour. We, for example, have to wait until our children are in bed to set up and do our rituals and spell work. Most of our children are too young for inclusion, and the one that is old enough isn’t mature enough to learn magic yet. Add to that jobs, housework, pet care, and everything else that comes with being a human adult.

Another thing you need to take into consideration with planning is when you are at your best mentally and energetically. You don’t want to be doing spell work when you’re exhausted from the day. You must be fully concentrated. You want to make sure you have the energy to properly do the thing. Therefore, don’t force yourself to do it if you really aren’t feeling up to it.

If you haven’t written out your spell already, now is a good time to do it. If it’s written words or ingredients in a sachet or bottle, now is the time to put it together. Think carefully about wording for written spells. As they say, be careful what you wish for because you just might get it. Sometimes things are taken literally by the universe, and you don’t always want it that way. Make sure you word it accordingly. Make sure to make a record of the ingredients and chants in your Book of Shadows. You can also leave space to write the results of the spell long term as well.

Once you’ve picked when you’re going to do it, and what you’re gonna say or do, now it’s time to pick the tools you’re going to use in a ritual setting. It’s a good idea to do your spell work in a ritual setting because casting a circle is an extra layer of protection. Do your research about which crystals, herbs, colors, or items correspond to symbolize your intentions. If you did a spell bottle or sachet, you likely already did this part too and can apply what you learned here. Dress your candles with oil or carve/paint sigils to help your intent. Create your altar, arrange your tools pleasingly. Put the herbs in a cauldron or other fire-safe container. Unless you don’t intend to burn them, then you can put them in whatever you want, even sprinkle them all over the altar.

Don’t forget to clean your space! You can do this by using a sage stick or incense to smoke cleanse. You can even do that around yourself to cleanse your own energy in preparation. You could even do a cleansing ritual bath before working your magic. Just make sure your energy, your mind, everything spiritual is clean and happy before you start. It will help more than you think.

Once you’ve done your ritual, and your spell is cast, burn the candle you dressed at the same time every day. Mark the candle so you know where to burn it each day. Spend that time focusing on your intention. If you can’t burn it at the exact same time every day, it’s not the end of the world. But set it at a time you can keep it punctual with.

If your spell doesn’t work, then it’s not meant to be at this time. It could be something to do again later, or it’s just not meant to be. The universe will let you know in its own way, one way or another. Intuition is a witch’s best friend. Never doubt it. Also be mindful of retrogrades, because depending on what planets are in retrograde at the time, that can sometimes mess with your spell work. Just do your research and be mindful.

I hope this helps those of you who are new to spell crafting. If I’ve left something out, veterans, let me know in the comments, I’d love your input! Until next time Lovelies!

Blessed Be!
