So, for anyone who doesn’t know me one of my most favorite animals are rats. Yesterday, I got surprised with a little baby boy rat for an early birthday present. He has been named Hornet. On the first day, he spent most of it on my shoulder in my hair. Towards bedtime, the peaceful happy rat noises and tiny litter patters of his paws made me start drifting in meditation. I connected to my spiritual guide rats who are all the past rats I’ve had. It was like they were all saying hello and that they missed me. It was really nice.

But that’s when I realized that I don’t know what rats symbolize or if they are an important animal to anyone specific. Therefore, I decided to look it up and share it with you!

Rats of course have a bad reputation throughout history due to their connection to the Black Plague and apocalypses. Rats are seen as unclean, making them connected to dirt and earth. They are also seen as destroyers and evil or demons, and omens of death. However, rats are also seen as bringers of wealth and good fortune. In India, rats are seen as vessels for Lord Ganesha. There’s Karni Mata temple where white rats are worshipped because they believe rats represent their goddess.

Having a rat as a spirit animal means you have many strengths. You have the ability to survive, no matter what gets thrown your way. It’s easy for you to meet your basic needs. You have great foresight, you are fast, intelligent, and flexible.

In reality, I found exactly what I expected in regard to rat symbolisms. I have some personal problems with rats being called unclean because rats are actually really clean creatures. I don’t think I will ever see rats in a bad light because I have always had them as loving pets.
