I was looking through my notes and my book of shadows. I was searching for something to write about for this week. I stumbled upon a random piece of paper with the “10 Commandments of Mother Earth” on it. Now, I’m going to be completely honest, I have no idea where I originally got it. But I love this concept. For the most part, I think everyone should probably follow it. This includes both Pagans and non-Pagans. This could help save the earth. The page in my book lacked any information on its origin. It also didn’t say when it was written. So I decided to do a little research on it. I also decided to share it with you all as well!

The 10 Commandments of Mother Earth

  1. Thou shalt love and honor the Earth, for it blesses thy life and governs thy survival.
  1. Thou shalt keep each day sacred to the Earth and celebrate the turning of its seasons.
  1. Thou shalt not hold thyself about other living things nor drive them to extinction.
  1. Thou shalt give thanks for thy food to the creatures and plants that nourish thee.
  1. Thou shalt limit thy offspring for multitude of people are a burden until the Earth.
  1. Thou shalt not kill nor waste Earth’s riches upon weapons of war.
  1. Thou shalt not pursue profit at the Earth’s expense but strive to restore its damaged majesty.
  1. Thou shalt not hide thyself or others the consequences of thy actions upon the Earth.
  1. Thou shalt not steal from future generations by impoverishing or poisoning the Earth.
  1. Thou shalt consume material goods in moderation so all may share Earth’s bounty.

Written by Ernest Callenbach in 1990.

When I looked it up, I didn’t find that much information on it. I found what I assume to be correct information on who wrote it and when. To be completely honest, I’m not sure if it’s true or not. I was only able to find a few places that actually had the author, most stated “author unknown”. As for when it was written, one of the places credited Ernest. This place also noted that it was copyrighted in 1990. (As I was editing this, I found Ernest Callenbach’s website, and was able to properly cite it!)

I don’t fully agree with everything here. Mainly because Serenity and I are probably already breaking commandment 5. Lol. But the rest of the 10 commandments I agree with.

What do you think about 10 Commandments of Mother Earth? Have you seen this before?
