Hello everyone! Welcome back to Nyx’s Grove. Today we are going to talk about someone that makes an appearance in our content very regularly.
Nyx.
I know, I’ve talked about her a lot between the podcast and my blog posts. But I figured that I would compile everything into one place for anyone that is specifically looking for things about Nyx.
For starters, who is Nyx?
Nyx is the Greek Goddess of the night. She is considered one of the primordial goddesses in Greek mythology because she came before the Titans and the Olympians. Nyx, along with Gaia, Tartarus, Eros, and Erebus were “born” from Chaos. Offen depicted as a shadowy figure, Nyx was present at the beginning of the creation of the world.
Nyx also mothered several other personifications as well. Her children include Hypnos, Thanatos, Aether, Hemera, Moros, the Keres, the Oneiroi, Momus, Oizys, the Hesperides, the Moirai, Nemesis, Apate, Philotes, Geras, and Eris.
One of my favorite stories from the mythology of Nyx involves her son Hypnos, the personification of sleep. When Hera wanted to cause Herakles to have misfortune while returning from Troy, Hera asked Hypnos to put Zeus to sleep so she could complete her task. When Zeus woke up, he was furious and tried to smite Hypnos. The only thing that stopped Zeus was that Hypnos ran to Nyx for help. Zeus backed off and kept his anger at bay for fear of invoking Nyx’s wrath.
In my experience working with Nyx, she is very caring, almost like a mother to her followers. She has always been willing to join our rituals and guide us or help us with our magic. But she has also not failed to make sure we know when we are fucking up or going in the wrong direction with something.
Overall, I don’t think I will have as strong of a connection with any other goddess than Nyx. She has been my patron goddess for the last almost decade, and it’s honestly something I struggle with now that I have been branching out and working with other deities. It almost feels like cheating or something like that. Which is completely ridiculous, and she has told me that multiple times. But working with other deities is still something that is fairly foreign to me.
So, what do you think about Nyx? Do you know any other stories about Nyx? Or do you work with her? Let me know in the comments below!
