Lantern in the Silence
Upon the snow-clad mount I stand,

There is a time for movement, for voices, for the laughter of companions on the road. And there is a time when the path narrows to a single set of footprints—yours—and the only sound is the crunch of your steps and the whisper of your own breath. The Hermit walks this road not in exile, but in purpose.
In the tarot, the Hermit is the keeper of the inner flame, the sage who steps away from the noise of the world to seek the unshakable truth within. He invites us to pause, to draw back, and to listen—to the quiet beneath the clamor, to the voice that is our own. This is not loneliness, but chosen solitude; not stagnation, but the deliberate stillness from which real movement begins.
The Sage on the Mountain

The lantern’s light holds a six-pointed star, the Seal of Solomon—symbol of divine wisdom, enlightenment, and protection. It shines only a few steps ahead, teaching that life’s answers rarely come all at once; we are meant to walk in faith, step by step, guided by our inner light.
On the other hand, the staff rests firmly on the ground, grounding him in personal truth and providing stability as he traverses the barren heights. The snowy mountaintop on which he stands is both a place of solitude and a symbol of spiritual mastery—cold to those who fear isolation, but pure to those who understand its gift.
Early tarot depicted the Hermit with an hourglass, a reminder of mortality and the fleeting nature of time. Over the centuries, the lantern replaced the hourglass, shifting the focus from counting the hours to illuminating the path. Still, time remains an unspoken companion to the Hermit—patience, cycles, and the maturity that only experience can grant.
Astrologically tied to Virgo, the Hermit embodies discernment, self-improvement, and quiet perseverance. Some traditions link him to Mercury, the messenger between worlds—reminding us that silence can speak louder than words, and that guidance may come in a language beyond speech.
Wisdom in Solitude
When the Hermit appears upright, he signals a time to retreat inward, to shed distractions and allow your own voice to rise above the noise. This is not withdrawal for its own sake—it is a sacred turning inward, a pilgrimage to your own truth.

Above all, the upright Hermit affirms that clarity and peace grow in the fertile soil of intentional solitude.
