What are the Elements?

What are the Elements?

Hello everyone! It’s me, I’m “back”. I’m not dead. At least physically. Mentally, I might be slightly brain dead honestly. Like Terra said, there are some changes that are in the process of happening for Nyx’s Grove. And I’m excited to see how the content and everything shape up differently in the future.

So, I’m here to talk about the Elements today. And honestly, I’m a little torn at how to even go about this post because part of me thinks that this is a very basic topic that most people will already know, but I know when we were first starting that this was something I know I looked for, there is definitely people that could be looking for the information.

So, for those of you that do not know what the elements are. The elements, in some practices, are the fundamental basics of energy. You have Air, Fire, Water, Earth, and Spirit. Spirit is a debate in itself because several practices do not include spirit, I personally don’t understand why, but to each their own. In my practice, the elements are VERY important. We call the elements for most every ritual or spell work we do. We use the energies the elements bring to manifest the goals that we are setting out to do.

Each element can be called for different purposes. I will list below the elements, their “meanings”, and the colors that goes along with them. I tend to call all the elements when I’m practicing, but you could also call them individually if that’s what you feel is right.

  • AIR – East – Wisdom and speed – Yellow
  • Fire – South – Passion and heat – Red
  • Water – West – Fluidity and Cleansing – Blue
  • Earth – North – Strength and Grounding – Green or sometimes Brown
  • Spirit – Center/All – Serenity and Calm – Purple or White

Each element is also tied to one of the zodiac signs and when someone is born under said sign, they typically feel closer to the elements associated with their zodiac sign. I personally don’t fall into this category and neither does Saffire. We were both born in September, so we are both Virgos. Virgos are ruled by the element Earth and neither of us would claim Earth to be our strongest elemental connection. For me it would be Fire, and for Saffire it would be Water. But at the same time, Terra was also born in September and is a Virgo that does align with the element Earth. So, it’s all subjective to the person that is in question. So don’t let someone tell you that you have to feel connected to a certain element because of when you were born. That’s bullshit. Follow your gut and align yourself with the element that you feel that you are connected to more.

A good way to figure out what element you are close to is to meditate on the elements and to focus on the one that seems the “brightest” or the strongest to you. Generally, that would be the element that would be “your” element. And your strongest element can change over time for various reasons. Most often energies and elements can change with puberty, childbirth, aging into elderly adulthood, or pretty much anything that would constitute a major life changing event.

So, that’s a brief overview of the Elements. Like I said in the beginning, most people probably already know most of this, but it’s still good to go over it for people that may need it. Let me know what you think of the elements in the comments below.

Hey! I'm Safire or Brett! I have been a mostly functional practicing Pagan for over a decade now. I am in a committed polyamorous relationship with a total of 5 children to our family. I handle more of the back end of Nyx's Grove, but I may pop onto the blog here and there, and you'll see me on The Witching Hour and HeathenGaming as well!
